Anyone know where to get the new road tax sticker for 2014? Is it at Phontong where you also get a license plate etc?

You can get them anywhere they do state technical inspections. You get both the road tax sticker and the smaller technical inspection sticker.

Hmmm, I used to get that smaller sticker no questions asked for 30.000 kip, I'll have to ask that person then I guess..

They don't ask me anything... Just pay the 30,000 kip and get the sticker... Don't remember ever having any problems except that they tend to run out of the stickers fairly quickly.

Still plenty of time before it will be available, around feb/march 2014.
You can get the International Transport Permit (allows you to cross the border with lao registered vehicle) at the same place, behind the Mahosot hospital.

Small building on the right, coming from hospital.

You don't need the one for 2014. They've abolished road tax for some reason. Not that I mind...

There is a letter circulating that I printed and carry in my car explaining the new rules (in Lao) to show the cops if they don't know about the changes. Whether it will help or not remains to be seen...

Most of the scooters have the sticker under the seat otherwise they would be very easy to 'reallocate'.

I saw the letter on JC. I also wonder if it will be very effective to convince the cop who is probably quite aware of the rule anyway.

So how do they check if you paid the tax, do you get a receipt or something? Also where do you pay the tax then, I thought buying the sticker was equivalent to paying the tax.

In the back of the vehicle registration booklet is a page they fill out when you pay the road tax. Same as before just don't get the sticker.
